Statement by Mr. Youssef Mahmoud, Deputy Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Burundi, at the second country-specific meeting, held 12 Dec 2006. The presentation focuses on how the UN in Burundi has been working to assist the government in its peacebuilding efforts since the last meeting held 13 Oct 2006.

Mr. Bo Schack, UNHCR’s Representative in Burundi, introduced the session’s Discussion Paper, noting that it was the result of extensive consultations with Burundian authorities, the civil society, UN agencies, donors and international NGOs. The key needs identified included:
